eThekwini Municipality announces beach closures due to heavy rains

The eThekwini Municipality closed northern and select southern beaches, issuing a public advisory due to damage caused by heavy rains.

The eThekwini Municipality has issued a public advisory. Announcing the closure of all beaches in the north and certain ones in the southern region until further notice.

The exception to this closure is Umgababa Beach in the south region, which remains open for public use.

The decision to close these beaches comes in the wake of damage caused by intense rainfall on 13 January. Impacting water quality in the affected areas. The heavy downpour led to the washing of logs and debris into rivers and the sea. Rendering the beaches unsafe for swimming.

Central beaches unaffected

Despite these closures, central beaches are unaffected and remain open, ensuring a safe environment for swimming and other water-related activities.
However, water activities are strictly prohibited in the closed beach regions.

“However, residents can still enjoy other activities along the beach that do not require coming into contact with sea water,” said the eThekwini Municipality.

eThekwini Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused

The municipality acknowledges the inconvenience caused by these closures and extends its apologies to the public.

Regular updates will be provided as the situation evolves, and authorities work to assess and address the aftermath of the heavy rains on the affected beaches.
