Residents of two major regions in North West will have to go through the majority of Wednesday 29 January without electricity, it was revealed earlier this afternoon. Eskom have confirmed that there will be an eight-hour delay in restoring the power to certain parts of the province.

Regions of North West without power on Wednesday:

Mahikeng is the biggest scalp claimed by this issue. As one of the biggest cities in North West, a high volume of workers, citizens and commuters will have to navigate the tricky conditions. Some locals reported a wave of power cuts on Tuesday in the town, but Eskom have failed to officially address these allegations.

There’s also Danville which is suffering. The entire region will remain powerless right through to Wednesday evening. The suburb, which is just south of Mahikeng, is served by the R503 and lies across the highway from the Mafikeng Game Reserve. Eskom confirmed the situation via a Tweet:

A portion of Mahikeng town as well as the whole of Danville are currently off due to major fault. Estimated restoration time is approximately within eight hours from now. [20:30 on Wednesday 29 January]

Eskom stay coy on Mahikeng blackouts

The utility have kept their cards close to their chest on Wednesday. They haven’t specifed what this “major fault” actually concerns. In the past month, we’ve seen an exploding sub-station plunge OR Tambo International Airport into darkness, and several defaulting municipalities are set to be cut-off for failing to pay their bills. If all goes to plan, these disruptions in Mahikeng will be minimised and resolved by this evening.
