Warning: Up to 6.5m damaging waves expected in Eastern Cape

Two separate weather warnings have been issued for the Eastern Cape. Damaging waves of up to 6.5m are expected from today.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow level 4 warning for damaging waves for parts of the Eastern Cape.

The warning is valid from Tuesday, 27 June until Wednesday, 28 June.

DAMAGING WAVES EXPECTED IN THE EASTERN CAPE

The weather service said South easterly wind waves between 4 – 6.5m is expected between Plettenberg Bay and Port Edward driven by a cut-off low and strong pressure gradient.

A Yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain in the Eastern Cape which is also valid until Wednesday, 28 June has been issued.

SAWS said the cut-off low system, west of the country is moving over the western parts of the country.

“The surface high pressure system will be extending its ridge over the Eastern Cape from today into tomorrow. Showers and thundershowers are expected over the province with significant falls expected over the Wild Coast today into tomorrow morning,” the weather service said.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

Damaging waves are expected to result in disruptions of small harbours and or ports, risk of dragging anchors and breaking mooring lines.

Combination of high sea state and strong to gale force winds will hamper progress and cause difficulty in navigation.
