A 52-year-old man who was arrested after he crashed into former president Jacob Zuma’s official convoy on Thursday was granted R500 bail.

Drunk driver granted bail
A 52-year-old man, who crashed into former president Jacob Zuma’s official convoy on Thursday, appeared in the Eshowe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and was granted R500 bail.
According to Sowetan Live, the man was charged with reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence.
The KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Natasha Kara, stated that the accused was granted bail and would be expected to appear in court on 3 May for further investigation.
Zuma and his protectors were on the way to Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal when the crash happened, and no one was injured.
Police stated that Zuma was moved away from the scene and taken to his home.
MK Party finds accident sketchy
According to Mail & Guardian, uMkhonto WeSizwe spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela stated that the incident was sketchy and that they could not confirm anything regarding the accident.
Ndlela stressed the importance of upholding security protocols amidst speculation about the accident, suggesting there might be sensitivities involved.
The party’s election head, Musa Mkhize, had claimed that Zuma was deliberately being targeted.
“What happened last night? I must say that, unfortunately, we have been waiting for it to happen, and it has happened because the president was warned that he will be lying in hospital; we don’t know what more is still coming,” he told the SABC.
The Mail & Guardian had reported that KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that he heard reports on the accident but had no tangible information on it.
These allegations by Mkhize came when the ANC KwaZulu-Natal Secretary Bheki Mtolo hinted that Zuma’s age could affect his involvement in the upcoming elections.
Mtolo stated that Zuma’s advanced age may lead him to be hospitalised, questioning his capacity for active political engagement.
On Thursday, the Electoral Commission of South Africa sustained a separate objection against Zuma running as a candidate in the May 29 national election due to his criminal record unless the decision is successfully appealed.
