Off-duty detective killed while defending tenant on Monday

An off-duty detective was fatally shot while trying to protect his wounded tenant from a gunman early on Monday.

An off-duty Detective-Sergeant was shot dead in Bathlaros, Northern Cape, early on Monday, 12 June. His tenant was also wounded in the attack.

Suspect follows tenant to detective’s property, resulting in fatal shooting

The deceased’s tenant and another individual reportedly had an altercation somewhere in Bathlaros. The tenant ran home and was followed by the suspect, who shot him in the leg in his shack behind the detective’s house.

“The victim ran for help to the sergeant, and when he came out of his house, the suspect shot him in the back.

“The deceased sadly succumbed on the scene while the other male victim was rushed to hospital for medical treatment,” said Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien.

Manhunt

The local police launched a 72-hour activation plan to mobilise the resources necessary to track down the suspect, and the Hawks will be handling the investigation.

Major-General Mmantsheke Lekhele, the acting police commissioner in the Northern Cape, said he was saddened and disheartened by the death of the detective.

On Sunday, two off-duty Sergeants were killed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in separate incidents, while alleged mall robbers in Nyanga wounded three policewomen on Monday. As previously reported, seven SAPS members died last week.
