Nice job if you can get it.
Remember when Pravin Gordhan was still Minister of Finance and he spoke about austerity? And you know how we’re in quite a bit of economic trouble because, revenue shortfall?
Well, they might have to find a few extra bucks because the deputy president, ministers and deputy ministers are all getting a little increase from next year. This after there was a ‘salary freeze’ for the 2017 financial year.
In 2016, the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers in November recommended that top officials, including Jacob Zuma, his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa, ministers and deputy ministers get no increase “as a patriotic sacrifice”.
This year, despite all the doom and gloom, that same committee recommended increases.
Go figure….
The commission’s head of secretariat, Peter Makapan, said that these were ‘inflation targeted increases’.
Shame, guys. Public officials are just trying to keep up with inflation.
Granted, the increases aren’t massive (in terms of percentage or the amount of money that the public officials are already earning) but it all adds up.
A small increase adds up to a fair chunk when you consider how many ministers and deputy ministers South Africa has. It’s a pretty nice job if you can get it. While we’re all counting our cents, and those living on grants are stressing, public officials are raking it in.
These increases were gazetted earlier this week and will apply for the 2018 financial year.
