With the current political rhetoric from all sides, it’s hardly surprising that some people are simply taking whatever land they want.

BusinessTech reports that, in an attempt to halt the rise of illegal land grabs, the City of Tshwane has set up a dedicated unit to deal with the issue.

Yeah, folks, it’s become such a big problem in SA that specialised units – units that could have been tasked with community safety had they not been needed for this – have had to be set up by the eThekwini, Cape Town and now Tshwane municipalities to stop people from taking land illegally.

According to Tshwane’s human settlements MMC Mandla Nkomo, some of the contributing factors to the surge in illegal land occupations are politics and criminal elements. Nkomo told Pretoria News on Thursday that local councillors as well as politicians just pick a piece of either public or private property, sell it to whoever wants to pay and next thing an informal settlement has sprung up.

The parts of Tshwane suffering the most include Nellmapius, Ga-Rankuwa, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve, Fort West and Mamelodi East.

“It is more criminal incidents than anything else. There are people who say the ANC is behind it; others blame the DA while fingers are also pointed at the EFF. The problem of land invasion in the city is out of control,” Nkomo said, adding that the land being occupied had, in many cases, not even been set aside for occupation.

“It is not fair to be taking money from the people that way. We need to investigate who is taking money in that fashion.”

The EFF has been dominating public discourse around illegal land occupation, with civic organisations having to get court orders stopping Julius Malema encouraging his red berets to ‘take any land they’ve decided they want’ without any regard for the constitution.
