Dagga bust latest: Police arrest suspects, recover R300 000 in drugs

The Hawks recovered R300 000 worth of dagga and arrested six suspect during a bust in Kimberly in the North West at the weekend.

Police have arrested six suspects for alleged possession of more than R300 000 worth of dagga in the North West Province.

Hawks spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi said that the six suspects, aged between 27 and 39, were expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates court on Monday 26 July. They are facing charges of illegal possession of marijuana.

Mnisi said the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Kimberley had swooped on the suspects while the police officers were performing their routine crime prevention duties in the city.

“The team noticed a suspicious vehicle and it was immediately stopped. Upon searching the vehicle, nine plastic bags full of dagga with an estimated street value of R303 000 was confiscated,” Mnisi said. 

Mnisis said that the vehicle was also found to have been stolen.

In a separate incident police arrested a 36 year old suspect on Friday after information surfaced about illicit products that were supposed to be transported from Kimberley to Upington.

“An intelligence driven operation was conducted by an integrated police team comprising of Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, Local Criminal Record Centre and Kimberley Visible policing which led to the arrest of the suspect,” Mnisi said.

“The vehicle was stopped and searched. During the search, illicit products including tobacco,baking powder and roll-ons were recovered,” Mnisi said.

Mnisi said that the suspect is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates’ court on Monday, 26 July 2021 to face charges of being in possession of illicit products.
