The Democratic Alliance has criticised Cricket South Africa(CSA) for stripping David Teeger of his captaincy, just a week before the U19 Cricket World Cup.

DA SLAMS CSA

On Friday CSA announced that they were stripping Teeger of his captaincy due to security reasons, as they are hints at possible protests at the tournament.

CSA says it fears Teeger could be a target after his utterances in support of Israeli solders whilst receiving an award at the ABSA Jewish Achiever Rising Star Awards.

At the time he said: “Yes, I’ve been (given) this award, and, yes, I’m now the Rising Star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel.”

In a statement, DA Shadow Sports Minister Veronique van Wyk says Teegers removal is a violation of the Bill of Rights.

“CSA has a duty to uphold the rule of law. This means protecting the rights of players, including their rights to freedom of expressioN”, says van Wyk.

Van Wyk has threatened to take CSA to the South Africa Human Rights Commission.

“The DA calls on CSA to immediately reverse the decision. Failing to do so will compel us to lodge a formal complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission.
