On Wednesday afternoon, City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille attended the EFF’s memorial service for Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The DA mayor also gave a brilliant speech to honour Mama Winnie.

On Thursday morning, the DA was asked about De Lille’s presence at the EFF service. The party explained that they would have liked a call from De Lille indicating that she would be attending.

Within hours, rumours started spreading on social media as some reports emerged that the DA had charged De Lille for attending the service.

“Mama believed that the politics of our people has no political party.”

“When you are poor… when you are landless, it doesn’t matter what political party you belong to. She would say, ‘our people’s struggles knows no political affiliation’,” De Lille said at the service.

The DA then released a statement on Thursday afternoon, in it, party national spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sekhe hit back at the false rumours.

“These reports are simply untrue.”

“Ms De Lille’s attendance at the memorial yesterday is a matter between her and the EFF leadership and not the DA. A courtesy call to alert the DA about her attendance would have been welcomed”

The party went on to mention that DA Free State leader Patricia Kopane also attended the service.  The party was aware that Kopane would attend.

“The DA regularly receives invitations from other political parties to address events or rallies and this is not in any way unusual. However, we do ask that the individual concerned informs the Party leadership.”

Nt’sekhe said that the DA has been mourning the loss of Mama Winnie and refused to “be drawn into mud-slinging in her name”.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane will be attending the state funeral for Mama Winnie on Saturday. He has also recently visited the Madikizela-Mandela family home.
