The South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating three unrelated cases which occurred on the evening of Friday 26 June 2020. Here’s what you need to know.

Murder and attempted murder cases, Northern Cape

Victoria West

In a statement shared on Saturday, SAPS confirmed that officers are investigating a case of murder after a 38-year-old man from Victoria West, Northern Cape, was reportedly stabbed by his girlfriend.

The statement alleged that at about 19:45 on 26 June 2020, “the victim was embroiled in an argument with his girlfriend who took a sharp object and stabbed him on the chest.”

The man was declared dead on the scene, and his 26-year-old girlfriend was arrested. She is expected to appear before the court on charges of murder in due course.

In addition to the above, authorities are also investigating a case of attempted murder after a 19-year-old man reportedly stabbed his friend, also 19 years of age, in the neck.

The two men were reportedly embroiled in an argument “which led to one stabbing the other”. The suspect was arrested and the victim is currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital.

Names and details have not yet been released, and the suspect is expected to appear before the court in due course. Following these events, the Police Management in the Cape said in a statement that “violence is not the answer”.

“The Police Management in the Northern Cape urges communities to always look for amicable solutions to resolve their disputes instead of resorting to violence. Violence is not the answer and can only lead to deaths and impairments of the society”.

Farm robbery, Free State

Meanwhile, Brigadier Sam Makhele confirmed that three robbers allegedly attacked a 50-year-old man and his 82-year-old mother at approximately 19:00 on Friday, 26 June.

The man and his elderly mother were at home on a farm near Petrusburg when their electricity left and the victim went out to restore the power. The suspects were not armed, but tied the victims up and demanded keys to the safe.

The criminals fled the scene with one firearm and two cellphones. No arrests have been made as yet and the local police department is investigating the robbery. Both victims were referred to a local hospital for treatment.
