Extremely cold, wet and windy weather conditions are expected in the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces from Monday, 26 June.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning which is valid until Wednesday, 28 June.

COLD WEATHER IN CAPE PROVINCES

The weather service said a cut-off low pressure is expected to affect the Western Cape and the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape from Monday through to Wednesday.

“The public and small stock farmers are advised that cold, wet and windy conditions can be expected with possible snowfalls on mountain tops on Wednesday,” SAWS said.

STRONG WIND AND WAVES IN THE WESTERN CAPE

The weather service had also issued a warning for strong wind and waves in the Western Cape.

It said the South Atlantic high pressure is dominating over the south-western parts of the Western Cape this past weekend.

Strong near-gale force (39-16km/h) south-easterly winds were expected on Sunday morning and becoming gale force (61-74km/h) overnight into Monday between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas.

“Along with these winds, south-easterly waves with significant heights of 4.0 to 5.0m are expected and subsiding during Monday afternoon,” SAWS said.

Furthermore, the weather service warned that the combination of these winds and quick successive steep waves will result in very rough and choppy seas that may lead to difficulty in navigation for small vessels and localised disruptions at ports.
