City’s POWER move: Smart meters and TID rollovers

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing efficiency and confronting energy challenges, City Power has initiated an expansive project to introduce smart meters across Johannesburg, at no cost to customers.

City Power is launching a large project to bring smart meters to Johannesburg, without charging customers.

The initiative, launched on Tuesday, 15 August 2023, coincides with the token identifier (TID) rollover project.

According to a statement released, City Power’s active effort involves auditing, replacing, and resetting pre-paid meters for customers, all at no cost.

Isaac Mangena, spokesperson, emphasises the vital need to replace and reset pre-paid meters before TID rollover for smart pre-paid meters’ compliance.

CITY POWER TO REPLACE NON SMART METERS

Due to a significant portion of existing meters lack SMART technology, the process involves replacing non-SMART (legacy technology) meters with advanced equivalents.

“Afterward, these will be reset to comply with TID standards.”

A crucial point in this journey arrives on November 24, 2024, when pre-paid meters using outdated tech will stop supplying electricity.

This requires a reset to avoid running out of available numbers in the credit token.

“Customers who’ve bought electricity units before the meter change will seamlessly transfer units to the new meter,” Mangena clarifies.

SEAMLESS TRANSFER OF UNITS TO THE NEW METER

People who bought electricity units before the meter change will smoothly move those units to the new meter, Mangena clarifies.

City Power’s entry into smart meters aims to relieve the ongoing energy crisis.

Smart meters will ease load shedding’s effects, bringing relief to Johannesburg’s residents, businesses, and the nation.

“Using these new meters lets us and our customers reduce electricity usage through remote load limiting, cutting load-shedding,” he adds.
