City of Cape Town endorses new ‘Winelands Airport’

A City of Cape Town Mayco member has fully endorsed plans that are under way for a second airport in the Mother City.

City Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth James Vos said the R7 billion airport – set to open in 2027 – would create jobs and attract more business and tourists to the region.

“I am proud to publicly endorse the development of the new Cape Winelands Airport. This project really promises to transform Cape Town’s land and skyscape, really ushering in a new era of opportunity and prosperity,” Vos said.

The airport is a former SA Airforce airfield, which is now privately owned, and acts as a space for general flying and a flight training academy.

Plans to build the new airport in the Winelands near Durbanville are subject to an ongoing environmental impact assessment.

New airport construction to begin in 2025

Vos said the city would support the project through the regulatory phase to ensure that the development goes ahead.

If all goes according to plan, construction will begin in 2025 and the new airport will open in 2027.

This second airport will support the existing Cape Town International airport to improve the city’s aviation capacity.

Vos added that while it is an expensive project, it is private sector-led development that the City of Cape Town will support.

‘Sustainable and innovative’

The airport also aims to be self-sufficient and off the grid for water and electricity as far as possible. Through a commitment to sustainability and innovation, it will harness renewable energy sources, such as solar and chicken manure biogas power, to power its facilities and operations.
