Capitec also recently warned its clients from falling victim to scammers at shopping centres offering ‘free airtime or data’.

“Don’t fall for scammers coming up to you on the street or at a mall with ‘free’ airtime or shopping vouchers from popular brands or companies,” the bank warned last month.

A TIME WHEN THESE TIPS MAY NOT COME IN HANDY

While the Capitec’s theoretical tips may prevent imminent danger, but they are not enough to withstand a physical confrontation or robbery at the ATM.

This was the case in the Johannesburg CBD when a woman reported ATM robbers who were consequently apprehended for robbing female patrons.

In a post, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) reported a female approached the ops officers at Wanderers and King George Streets in JHB about these incidents.
“She alluded that there are two males who rob females at the ATM inside Choppies shop. The officers proceeded to the shop and arrested two suspects for robbery. Evidence was found on the shop CCTV cameras,” the report read.
