Bronkhorstspruit bus accident: One person dead, four injured

An accident on the Bronkshorstspruit Rd, Bronkhorstpruit, on Friday 27 December claimed the life of one person, while multiple injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Netcare 911 responded to the scene where one car and one bus was involved in a collision. Paramedics assessed the scene and found a man with severe injuires who was declared dead on site.

Advanced Life Support intervention was required to stablise another passenger. Once treated, the woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital by Netcare’s HALO 1 trauma team.

Three other passengers, a man and two women, sustained minor to moderate injuries and were stablized on site. Once treated, they were transported to hospital as well.

Festive season road safety report

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula’s festive season road safety report was delivered on Monday 23 December and highlighted road safety statistics for SA’s ‘bloodiest period’.

Thankfully, the data shows that Mbalula’s safety stragegies have lead to fewer road deaths, however, the figures are still shockingly high and more work is needed.

According to Mbalula, his team’s evaluation shows that their law enforcement inverventions “are on target and continue to have the desired impact”. He added:

“Since the beginning of the festive season campaign a total of 629 661 vehicles were stopped in 539 roadblocks staged nationwide.”

He added that the number of arrests have come down from 3 052 in 2018 to to 2 915 in 2019, representing a slight improvement in driver behaviour. Mbalula added:

“However, we remain concerned about the high number of people who continue to drive under the influence of alcohol.”

Minister Mbalula also shared behind-the-scenes photos of his team clamping down on drunk driving and the use of unlawful vehicles on the road.

In a bust at the weighbridge in Limpopo, the team also focused on unroadworthy and overloaded trailers headed to Zimbabwe and Malawi. Mbalula confirmed:

“Tonight I am leading a series of law enforcement operations in various hotspots in Gauteng overnight.”

• Wear a seatbelt
• Don’t text or take phone calls
• obey the laws of the road
• Stick to major routes or roads
• Don’t get stranded without fuel
