But what’s the game of bridge about?

Here’s what to know about Bill Gates’ favourite card game, and where you can go to pick up some of the game’s skills yourself.

What is Bridge?

According to Collins Dictionary, the game is “a form of bridge, developed from auction bridge, in which only the number of tricks named in the contract may be counted toward a game.”

Like Cassino or Sevens, players have to make “packs” or win tricks.

Bridge has two teams, four players, and 52-cards. Players take turns to place their cards in the middle, with the highest number and suit winning the trick.

There’s no “Go Fish” in this game!

Players each get 13 cards, and must play 13 tricks as decided by the game’s first Auction phase. The Auction sets the standard: which suit and number is the highest ranking?

Bill isn’t the only world famous bridge player. Gandhi and FW de Klerk were both interested themselves.
