BREAKING: Taxi strike called off with immediate effect

The violent taxi strike will continue on TODAY until a moratorium on impounding taxis is instituted.

BREAKING NEWS – THE TAXI STRIKE IS CALLED OFF

The SA National Taxi Council (SANTACO) announced on Thursday evening that the taxi strike was called off with immediate effect.

Santaco’s Mandla Hermanus said he is pleased to announce that as part of the resolution reached between the Taxi Industry and the Government.

A RESOLUTION WAS REACHED BETWEEN SANTACO AND THE GOVERNMENT

“There is an agreement that the next 14 days will be utilised to work towards the release of the vehicles that were wrongly impounded. This is a significant step towards restoring trust and operations to their regular state.”

He furthermore said on behalf of SANTACO Western Cape, he conveyed their sincerest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives during the taxi strike.

THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WILL BE UTILISED TOWARDS THE RELEASE OF THE IMPOUNDED VEHICLES

“We stand with you in this time of grief and offer our profound sympathies. We also extend our heartfelt sympathy to everyone who was negatively affected by the events of the past few days.

“It deeply saddens and disappoints us that it took this long for all parties to find a resolution. The wellbeing of our community and the public at large has always been our top priority, and it pains us to witness the unnecessary pain and suffering that transpired.”

FIVE PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN THE VIOLENT TAXI STRIKE

The strike, sparked by protests by taxi drivers against a clampdown by city officials against traffic offenders, including impounding their vehicles, disrupted traffic on the N2 highway, causing delays at Cape Town International Airport and causing schools and clinics to shut.

Five people have been killed in the violent taxi strike thus far.

Here are the deaths recorded:

• A 40-year-old man, a British national was shot and killed at the Ntlangano Crescent, Nyanga on Thursday.
• A LEAP officer was shot and killed while on duty on Friday at 20:15, Miller Road in Nyanga.
• A man was killed on Saturday in Mfuleni.
• A man was was shot and killed on Monday, on Airport Approach Road.
• A man was shot and killed on Monday on Borcherds Quarry Road, Nyanga.
