Orlando Pirates have reached yet another Nedbank Cup final where they’ll defend their crown against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates going for the double-double

The Buccaneers have become cup specialists under Jose Riveiro. They’ve won consecutive MTN8 crowns and are just a single match away from making it a double-double by scooping Nedbank Cup glory in 2024. The Sea Robbers are also embroiled in a race for a top-two finish in the league, facing stern competition from an impressive Stellenbosch team.

Orlando Pirates are hitting form at the right time

Pirates have leaned heavily on the goal-scoring form of Tshegofatso Mabasa and, to a lesser extent, Patrick Maswanganyi this term. Both weren’t on the score sheet against Chippa, but that wasn’t a problem for Pirates. Kabelo Dlamini, another man having a stellar season, scored a brace and central defender Tapelo Xoki also grabbed himself a goal. Mabasa has 13 goals in the league this term, with three goals and two assists in four Nedbank Cup appearances. To say he’s the man of the moment is an understatement. Patrick Maswanganyi has played a stellar supporting role in the number 10 position, scoring five goals and supplying five assists in the league. Three goals and three assists in four Nedbank Cup appearances make him arguably the tournament’s best player this term. Sundowns are the final barrier between them and the riches of Nedbank Cup glory. They’ll land R7 Million if they win it.

Transfer rumours

According to SoccerLaduma, AmaZulu is closing in on the signing of rumoured Chiefs and Pirates target Shaune Mogaila. The Royal AM man has made 15 appearances in the league this season with two assists. In February, we reported interest from Orlando Pirates:

“Versatile former Royal AM wide player Shaune Mogaila is now available on a free transfer, and he’s been a target for the Buccaneers for some time. According to FARPost, Pirates aren’t the only side showing an interest. Mogaila can operate on either flank of attack or defence, making him a priceless option. Although not a direct replacement, he’d be a great squad player,”
