Severe thunderstorms expected in Gauteng TODAY

Residents in Gauteng should be prepared for severe weather conditions today as thunderstorms are anticipated.

Gauteng residents are on high alert as severe thunderstorms are predicted to hit the province today, on 11 December 2023.

Gauteng Weather through an announcement on X platform, has issued a warning about the likelihood of severe thunderstorms, echoing concerns raised by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

“Severe thunderstorms possible,” said Gauteng Weather.

What did the South African Weather Service issue?

SAWS has forewarned of an approaching weather system that is poised to bring prolonged heavy rain across multiple provinces. Encompassing North West, the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and to a lesser extent, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The forecast suggests the potential for substantial rainfall. Heightening the risk of flooding and river overflow in these areas.

To ensure public safety, residents are urged to stay informed by regularly checking weather updates and heeding warnings issued by the weather service.

“Moreover, as the rain produced by this system is expected to continue unabated into Monday, 11 December, the ground is likely to become saturated, leading to widespread overland runoff into streams and rivers.

“Whilst this phenomenon will ultimately lead to increased dam levels, the risk of river flooding (and associated road closures and general traffic disruption) will remain particularly high. Disaster management practitioners are also advised to maintain a high level of vigilance during this period, should river flooding continue to pose a safety and health risk to the public at large,” SAWS said.
