Shiveluch, one of Russia’s most active volcanoes, erupted violently in the early hours yesterday, 11 April, space.com reports.

The eruption caused plumes of ash and dust that could be seen from space. An ash cloud spread over an area of 108,000 square kilometers.

Aviation safety notices after volcanic eruption

The debris from the eruption prompted aviation safety notices in the area.

This was the largest fallout from an eruption in the past 60 years.

Weather satellites, including the HIMAWARI-9 satellite operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency, captured stunning images of the eruption.

HIMAWARI-9 recorded a timelapse showing the ash rising to heights of 11 miles (18 km) as it flowed southward across the peninsula.

The satellite also visualised the spread of sulfur dioxide, a toxic gas produced by volcanic activity.

No casualties reported

The eruption resulted in power outages and school closures throughout the Kamchatka Peninsula,

There were no reported casualties, and authorities did not issue any evacuation notices.

The eruption was a reminder of the unpredictable and potentially devastating nature of volcanic activity.

The governor of Kamchatka, Vladimir Solodov, stated that three villages, namely Kliuchy, Kozyrevsk, and Mayskoye, were the most severely affected.

He advised people in these villages to stay at home and ordered the closure of schools.
