The City of Joburg has announced that the cause of the deadly explosion was methane gas.

BREAKING – METHANE GAS CAUSED THE DEADLY EXPLOSION

The deadly explosion tore through 400 meters of Lilian Ngoyi Street, formerly Bree, in Johannesburg.

City Manager Floyd Brink made the announcement at a press briefing on Wednesday, saying that the results of gas tests taken from within the cavity of the road had confirmed the presence of methane at a level between 5% and 15%.

GAS TESTS CONFIRMED THE PRESENCE OF METHANE

Anything above that would have caused a fire.

Brink said that the gas traveled at an alarming speed, somewhere between 350 to 1,700 meters per second. He added that the City had spent R4 million on technical experts, reinforcements, technology, and efforts to sustain residents affected by the explosion.

CITY HAS SPENT MILLIONS ON EXPERTS , REINFORCEMENTS, TECHNOLOGY AND EFFORTS TO SUSTAIN RESIDENTS

Civil engineer and City of Joburg consultant Johan La Grange said methane gas is explosive at low levels, and there had been two similar explosions around the world this year.

He said that there was global interest in the Lilian Ngoyi Street blast as people were looking to learn from the event and what corrections had been made.

THERE WAS A SMALL SEISMIC ACITIVITY ON THE DAY OF EXPLOSION

La Grange further said there was a small seismic activity at 15:00 on the day of the explosion, and an earthquake earlier in the week likely released the gas from the lower tunnels.
