Mayor Kaunda refutes claims of directing eThekwini resources for Umkhonto weSizwe party support circulating on social media.

In response to spurious allegations circulating on social media, eThekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has vehemently denied directing municipal resources to support activations for the newly formed Umkhonto weSizwe party.

“Mayor Kaunda views these allegations by the faceless and coward individual using a handle @goolam on X, formely Twitter, as an attempt to tarnish his image and that of the city,” read the statement.

Emphasising his commitment to transparent leadership, Mayor Kaunda, as a disciplined member of the ANC, asserts that he would never divert public resources for an agenda unknown to him and the council.

Financial stability under Mayor Kaunda’s leadership

Under Mayor Kaunda’s leadership, eThekwini Municipality has consistently obtained an unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General, highlighting the accountability and transparency within the municipality. Contrary to the claims of financial distress, the municipality’s financial indicators paint a different picture.

As of 30 Novembe 2023, eThekwini Municipality boasts a cash reserve of R7.6 billion, with a comfortable 61 days cash on hand, well within the National Treasury norm of 30-90 days.

The city’s liquidity indicators remain healthy, with a current ratio of 1.56 times as of 31 October 2023, within the National Treasury norm of 1.5–2.0 times.

Moreover, fixed investments for the municipality totaled R7.55 billion out of the R7.79 billion cash on hand as of the end of October.

The financial report reveals a surplus of R1.48 billion, emphasising that Mayor Kaunda is leading a functional and financially stable municipality.

Dismissing baseless claims

In light of these financial facts, Mayor Kaunda urges the public to disregard the baseless allegations and affirms his commitment to responsible and accountable governance in eThekwini Municipality.
