Johannesburg police recently conducted a successful operation, uncovering a counterfeit chips production led by illegal immigrants.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Region E officers took an unexpected twist during a stop and search operation at Zinna Drive in Marlboro, Johannesburg. The focus of their attention was a white panel van carrying two male occupants, which were the illegal immigrants.

During the search, officers uncovered boxes within the vehicle, and upon closer inspection, a concerning discrepancy emerged. The address on the packages of potato chips found in the boxes did not align with the manufacturer’s registered address. That raised immediate suspicions.

What was alarming about the potato chips found?

Equally alarming was the absence of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) mark of approval on the discovered products.

Following protocol, the officers decided to escort the male occupants of the panel van to the alleged manufacturer’s address in Marlboro.

The unfolding events at the location would reveal a series of violations that would soon involve multiple authorities.

Environmental Health Inspectors swiftly responded to the scene, unveiling a startling revelation: the business owner lacked a valid manufacturer certificate and the essential documents required for lawful operation.

This revelation escalated the situation, prompting the involvement of Home Affairs immigration officials.
In a move to ascertain the legal status of the employees at the business, Home Affairs immigration officials conducted verification checks. Shockingly, it was uncovered that seven individuals employed at the establishment were illegal immigrants.

Seven illegal immigrants arrested and the owner escaped

The consequences were immediate – all seven undocumented persons were detained at Bramley Police Station.

Meanwhile, the owner of the business managed to elude authorities, remaining at large.

“All seven of the undocumented persons were detained at Bramley Police Station and the owner of the business is still at large,” read the statement.

The unfolding events at Zinna Drive serve as a stark reminder of the multifaceted challenges faced by law enforcement. In maintaining public safety and enforcing regulatory compliance within the business sector.
