It was a rather interesting evening on South African television when the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and lobby group Afriforum once again butted heads over the use of the ‘Kill the Boer’ chant. EFF spokesperson Sinawo Tambo and Afriforum’s Deputy CEO Kallie Kriel ‘slugged it out’ over the contentious topic on the SABC News programme It’s Topical on Sunday evening, 6 August 2023.

‘KILL THE BOER’: EFF VS AFRIFORUM

Afriforum maintains that ‘Kill the Boer’ undoubtedly promotes and insights violence against white people and the proof is in the fact that people are being killed. Kriel mentioned a farm murderer from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission who apparently admitted that his actions were inspired by the song.

“If we look at a family in Welkom, a mother and daughter. When they were murdered, their own blood was used to write ‘Kill the Boer’ on a wall in that house. So, I think it is totally irresponsible. If you really want to look at the struggle and you want to fight the struggle, do that. But don’t bring ethic violence into this. It is simply unacceptable,” Kriel said.

‘THIS IS A LIBERATION SONG’

Hitting back, the EFF said it had no intention of killing white people. Tambo said if violence had been their intention during their chanting of ‘Kill the Boer,’ then they would have carried out such a plan.

Tambo added that the idea that black people would be encouraged by a mere song to exercise violence against others is racist and undermines them.

“If we wanted to do anything, we could have done it on that day. There were 100 000 people at that stadium … we have no intention of killing white people. We have no policy of the EFF that says we’re going to kill white people. This is a liberation song and we are going to defend it”
