The City of Tshwane’s now disgraced former mayor Dr Makwarela Murunwa has handed himself over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), more than a month after he was forced to resign in the wake of a scandal surrounding a rehabilitation certificate.

Mkwarela had been disqualifiied as a councillor after it was learnt that he had been declared insolvent. As per the law, anyone who has been declared insolvent cannot run for office.

COPE ‘CAUGHT BY SURPRISE’ BY MAKWARELA SCANDAL

The Congress of the People (COPE) has faced immense criticism for failing to vet Makwarela and has admitted it was caught by surprise when it emerged that he wasn’t even eligible to be its councillor.

“We were caught by surprise when we were confronted by the media with news that our member who is a councillor in the Tshwane Metro Council was disqualified by the municipal manager because he was sequestrated some few years ago and that it is unlawful for any public representative to occupy such an office,” said Cope national spokesperson Dennis Bloem.

The mayoral seat became vacant following the resignation of Randall Williams. The council has since voted in the DA’s Cilliers Brink.
