The Democratic Alliance (DA) is on the receiving end of some fiery criticism on social media after congratulating the newly-crowned Miss South Africa, Natasha Joubert.

Joubert was announced as the winner of the pageant during a live broadcast of the event, which was held at the Sunbet Arena in Pretoria on Sunday evening, 13 August 2023.

Just moments after the announcement, social media, including X, was awash with congratulatory messages for Joubert, including from the likes of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the official opposition.

While there may be nothing wrong with the DA lauding the new Natasha Joubert, South Africans were rather quick to point out that the party had never congratulated previous title holders, many of them black.

Former Home Affairs spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete asked on X (formerly known as Twitter), whether it was indeed the first time the party started posting messages of tribute and congratulations to previous winners.

One person wrote: “Guys please search for Tunzi, Musida, Nokeri and Mswane under this account. The they’ll tell you the DA is for everyone.” This was in reference to former Miss SA and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, Ndevu Nokeri, Mashudu Musida and Lalela Mswane.

Many people on X claimed to have searched for ANY DA statement or post mentioning them, but apparently came up empty.

Another one wrote: “It’s giving ‘Whites Only'”

The new Miss SA received R1 million in cash in a prize and sponsorship package that includes the use of a serviced apartment at the lavish Brookfield at Royal in Kensington – developed by Tricolt – for the year of her reign. She will also get to drive a Mercedes-Benz GLC as well as go on a trip to Paris sponsored by L’Oreal.
