WATCH: Citrusdal in lockdown after floods wash away roads

The Cederberg Local Municipality said the town of Citrusdal in the Olifants River Valley has been cut off after floods washed away the access road.

Infrastructure Damage and Evacuations – Citrusdal cut off

In an update on Thursday morning, 15 June, the municipality said the access road to and from the town had been washed away, and traffic was coming to a halt on either side.

The Bo-River and Hexrivier roads remain open, while the road to Elandskloof is closed. At 11:17, the municipality said the N7 Highway was open to traffic.

Citrusdal and parts of Clanwilliam also face an electricity outage due to an Eskom fault.

In addition, 88 people were evacuated from the Riverview informal settlement and are currently being in the Oranjeville Sports Hall.

Fifty-seven people in temporary housing in Wupperthal were also evacuated and are being accommodated at the Eendrag Community Hall.

“The water infrastructure is under serious pressure, and we request people to use water more than sparingly.

“We request the communities to cooperate with authorities and stay clear of roads and affected areas.” Said the Cederberg Municipality.

Municipal infrastructure is being assessed, while food parcels and blankets are being arranged for displaced and affected residents.

Widespread flooding is being experienced across the Western Cape. The disruptive rainfall is associated with a series of passing cold fronts.
