Tongaat businessman murdered: What we know

A passerby out for a walk at approximately 4:45 noticed that the property’s back door and gate to the house stood open. He then notified the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Tongaat Operations Center.

The man claimed to have seen blood by the door. Following that, employees who arrived at work “noticed the house ransacked after they looked through a window”.

Reaction Officers from Tongaat and Ballito were dispatched to the property and found an elderly man in the kitchen, covered in blood. He had been stabbed four times.

The man confirmed that his son Ashver Sukwa, a 35-year-old businessman, operated a fruit and vegetable distribution business from the property.

Father stabbed four times

According to the father, he “opened up for one of his employees who was expected to transport a load of bananas to the market”. The Reaction Unit reports:

“A South African national with three other men held him up and forced him into the warehouse. They repeatedly stabbed and assaulted him before locking him in a cold room in the warehouse”.

The elderly man made his way back into the home after the suspects had fled. His son wasn’t at the property at the time and the man assumed that he had gone after the suspects.

However, he noticed that his firearm was missing.

Body found in Tongaat home

Upon investigation, the father found blood on one of the beds. The body of the 35-year-old Sukwa was then found wrapped in a blanket.

He had been stabbed “at least 35 times”, and paramedics were unable to revive him. Sukwa was declared deceased “a short while later”. The motive for the murder is believed to be robbery.

Furthermore, reaction officers confirmed that Sukwa’s home had been ransacked and two safes were found opened. A firearm was also reported as missing.

Sukwa’s 67-year-old father was rushed to the hospital for emergency medical attention. Police are at the scene of the crime and the investigation continues.
