A suspect believed to be part of the blue light gang in Gauteng was arrested.

The blue light gang has been terrorizing Gauteng motorists

The suspect was arrested during a multidisciplinary law enforcement operation. Members from the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s National Anti-Corruption Unit, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Gauteng Highway Patrol, and Johannesburg Metro Police Department worked together for the arrest.

The blue light gang has been terrorizing motorists on Gauteng freeways. The arrest comes after a number of complaints were made about hijackings on provincial and national roads in the province.

Arrive Alive stated that the gang tends to drive vehicles with blue lights. They also wear clothes that look similar to police uniforms.

How was the arrest made?

Intelligence was gathered following the hijacking of a Toyota Hilux GD6 on the N12 near Delmas. The victim was not only taken hostage by the suspects but his bank cards were used to make withdrawals of large sums of money. Expensive alcoholic beverages were also purchased.

Authorities activated their undercover detective machinery in Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus after video footage of the suspects purchasing alcohol circulated. The footage showed clear photos of the suspects.

The suspect who was arrested was spotted in Vosloorus. Authorities followed him to his house where he was caught and taken in for questioning. The suspect confessed that he was part of the N12 hijacking.

He is currently detained at the Vosloorus SAPS station. The suspect is expected in court soon and investigations into the incident are continuing.

Trucking companies warned of fake metro cops

Previously, it was reported that trucking companies have been warned of fake metro cops targeting freight drivers on major highways in the country. A photograph making rounds depict a man in a metro police reflector jacket coming out of a stationary white VW Jetta which is used in the commission of the crime.

The reflector jacket or uniform worn by the impersonator cannot be easy identified due to the quality of the image; however, the number plate of the vehicle is easily identifiable. In the wake of this concerning behaviour, there are measures to take when you feel unsafe when being stopped by fake ‘metro cops’. Read the full story here.
