Police management in Mpumalanga has strongly condemned the rape of a 79-year-old blind pensioner in Vosman on Sunday, 2 May.

The suspect has since swiftly been arrested with the assistance of community members.

SUSPECT LIVED IN SAME STREET AS RAPE VICTIM

Police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the rape occurred while the victim was home alone.

The 48-year-old suspect who is regarded as a neighbour, lived just a few houses away from the elderly woman’s house.

“When he found her home alone the accused allegedly raped the elderly woman. She  ran towards the street as her daughter arrived home with her male friend. Her daughter then managed to grab her and tried to find out what was going on when she realised that her mother looked terrified,” said Hlathi.

COMMUNITY TACKLED THE SUSPECT

According to Hlathi the daughter’s friend “wrestled” the suspect to the ground while members of the community arrived to assist.

“Her male friend in the meantime, went to the house to investigate why the elderly woman ran out of the house and shockingly found the suspect putting his trousers back on.”

“Police was later notified about the incident and upon arrival, arrested the suspect on a charge of rape but due to his injuries, he was taken to hospital for medical treatment, he said.

South African Police Service (SAPS) Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Thulani Phahla, welcomed the suspect’s arrest. However cautioned members of the public not to take the law into their own hands but to allow the law to take its course.

“We are adamant that the investigation team will work hard to ensure that justice is served for the elderly,” said Phahla.

The suspect has since appeared before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court in absentia on Monday, 3 May and the case has been postponed to 10 May.
