South Africa is about to experience a new wave of captivating television as BBC Primetime launches on the SABC.

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Studios and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are joining forces to introduce BBC Primetime to local audiences in Mzansi.

Scheduled to premiere in May, BBC Primetime promises a wide selection of top-tier dramas, factual entertainment, and documentaries, writes Bizcommunity.

These shows have been carefully curated from BBC Studios’ prestigious collection.

Airing on S3 and SABC+ every weeknight from 21:00 to 23:00, BBC Primetime is BBC Studios’ most expansive branded service in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

BBC Primetime world-renowned shows

BBC Primetime now offers S3 viewers access to globally-recognised programmes. The new content block includes:

Luther – the psychological crime thriller featuring Idris Elba
Critical – an intense medical drama
Top Gear – the much-loved factual motoring show
Cheaters – the popular romantic-comedy series

Additionally, audiences can delve into thought-provoking documentaries like “Louis Theroux: Forbidden America,” which reveals controversial aspects of American entertainment and culture.

“I am so excited to launch our first BBC branded block in Africa with SABC,” says Pierre Cloete, the Commercial Director at BBC Studios in Africa.

“BBC Primetime will be hand-picked for S3 audiences, packed with a selection of incredible programming from our award-winning catalogue.”

“This marks our first block for free-to-air audiences in South Africa, giving 13 million homes access to BBC Studios’ shows.”

Sane Zondi, Programming Manager at SABC, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the partnership’s commitment to delivering premium international content to South African viewers.

Top Gear returns

“We are excited to have access to a vast catalogue from the BBC, and the unlimited world-class entertainment our viewers will be able to enjoy through BBC Primetime on S3.”

“The deal allows us to bring back some of the iconic BBC titles to our viewers which formed weekly habitual viewing, with Top Gear being the most notable one,” she added.
