Hugo Broos has named a surprising 23-man squad for the up-and-coming FIFA Series in Algeria.

Percy Tau was the most surprising exclusion.

Bruce Bvuma’s inclusion comes as a surprise, given that Amakhosi have not had representatives in the national set-up for some time. Furthermore, he also struggled in the recent Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, letting in three goals.

The side is dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns, as expected, given their dominance and stronghold on the PSL over the last 6 years.

The Brazilians boast the likes of Ronwen Williams (captain), Sydney Mobbie, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modena, Thapelo Modena, Teboho Mokoena and Themba Zwane.

Moreover, Khulisa Mudau is out injured. Finally, Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa also did not make the cut.

BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR PROMISING STRIKERS

Patrick Maswanganyi (Orlando Pirates) gets a golden opportunity to earn experience with the national side and to stake a claim for the jersey going forward. The promising Bucs forward is the only attacker selected from Mayfair.

Moreover, Oswin Appollis, Mihlali Mayambela, Iqraam Rayners and Khanyiso Mayo all have a chance to impress Broos, having excited PSL fans over the past few seasons.

Bafana Bafana will compete in the FIFA Series in Algeria, set to run from 17-27 March 2024.

SA take on Andorra on Thursday, 21 March, before facing the hosts, Algeria on Thursday, 26 March.
