ANC declares national week of mourning for Jessie Duarte

The ANC has described its late deupty secretary-general Jessie Duarte as a selfless and loyal servant of the people

The African National Congress (ANC) has declare this week a mourning period, following the passing of its deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte and directed all provinces and regions to fly party flags at half mast, in her honour.

Duarte lost her battle with cancer on Sunday, 17 July 2022, and was buried on the same day at the West Park cemetery in Johannesburg, in accordance to Muslim customs.

The ANC has described Duarte as a selfless and loyal servant of the people.

“She was a colossal giant whose track record in the struggle was unparalleled; a human rights activist andleaderofabsolute conviction to the cause. Like the warrior women who burnt their passes in 1913, and as the defiant women who marched on the Union Buildings in 1956, Comrade DSG was determined that women should occupy their rightful place in the struggle for national liberation,” said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe.


As part of the national week of mourning, the ANC says it has planned a number of activities have been planned culminating in a National Memorial Service for Jessie Duarte, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday the 21 July 2022 at the Johannesburg City Hall.

The party says condolence books are available at all its provincial offices for both our members and the general publicwhomaywish to convey their messages in person.

From Wednesday 20 July 2022, a number of ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) members, veterans and others who have worked with Duarte will be conducting media engagements reflecting on her life. Provinces will also have their own memorial services, starting with Mpumalanga on Wednesday, 20 July 2022 in Middleburg and the Free State province in all their 5 regions. North West, Limpopo and Western Cape will have their respective memorials on Friday, 22 July 2022.

“The ANC staff at Luthuli House who have been working closely with the DSG until her last days are also planning to host a memorial service on Friday the 22nd of July 2022 to further reflect on their own intimate experience working with the DSG. The leagues of the ANC are also expected to conduct memorial services in honour of the DSG,” Mabe said.
