Legal expert, Zola Majavu has slammed Advocate Malesela Teffo’s conduct during the trial of slain Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, at the Pretoria High Court.

Advocate Teffo represented four of the five accused for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa. He quit as legal representative for accused 1 – 4 on Tuesday, 12 July citing harassment from the State and the court.

In an interview witrh eNCA, Majavu said it is not unusual for a defence counsel to withdraw at any stage of the proceedings which may be as a result of the breakdown in the relationship of trust between the giver of his mandate or it could be for reasons that border on ethical considerations.

Majavu said it is extremely unusual for a defence counsel to withdraw in the manner that Adv Teffo did and what is most peculiar are the reasons advanced.

“It sounds to me like someone who is not properly schooled in the rules of procedure or who simply cannot accept that sometimes decisions will not always go their client’s way….What my colleague did is simply unacceptable and inexcusable. It is certainly peculiar and there was absolutely no basis for the rant that we saw,” Majavu said.

Speaking outside court after dropping the bombshell Adv Teffo accused Presiding Judge, Tshifhiwa Maumela of being biased.

“What is happening here is heartbreaking. The justice system in this country is becoming a circus..my clients are being prosecuted for sins they never committed. I cannot be part of this. Each time I raise an issue for accused 1 – 4 Judge Maumela cannot take a decision but let it be another one who raises something he is able to take a decision,” Teffo said.
