Magashule confirms he is speaking to EFF leaders as he skirts questions over possibly joining Malema and co.

Former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule, who was expelled from the ruling party a few weeks ago, says he has met with leaders of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), ahead of a press conference where he will reveal his future plans.

Speaking to Thabo Mdluli on Newzroom Afrika in an interview about his political woes, Magashule again skirted around the question of whether he would join the Julius Malema-led EFF.

“I’m talking to Marshall [Dlamini]. He’s my comrade,” said Magashule. Marshall Dlamini is the EFF secretary-general.

Magashule also confirmed that he has been speaking to Malema, after the EFF leader revealed his overtures recently in a podcast.

Can Ace help Malema beat ANC?

On 15 June 2023 in a Sunday Times podcast, Malema revealed that the EFF was wooing Magashule to join their ranks.

“I’m talking to him. We’re at an advanced stage of the discussions. Electoral politics are politics of numbers. It’s very important that you talk to everyone.

“I’m talking to the man [Magashule]. When I say I’m talking to the man I mean the EFF is in advanced engagements with Ace Magashule,” Malema said in the podcast.

Ace to reveal his future plans

Magashule also revealed that he would be holding a press conference on Monday, 3 July 2023, where he would reveal his next moves.

Newzroom Afrika’s Thabo Mdluli interviewed former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule about his political future.

This comes after he was expelled from the ANC after being found guilty of misconduct for suspending ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Magashule then also failed to issue an apology to Ramaphosa after being instructed to do so by the party.

Magashule’s legal woes

In addition to his political woes, Magashule and his co-accused – including businessman Edwin Sodi – are also facing corruption charges over the botched multimillion-rand asbestos removal contract in the Free State.

The accused are facing 95 charges, including contravention of the Public Finance Management Act, money laundering and fraud.
