Thankfully, the emergence of the app ecosystem has made exploring South Africa easier and more exciting than ever; the power of the internet has placed a wealth of knowledge directly at our fingerprints, and this is perhaps leveraged nowhere better than when exploring a whole new nation.

In this light, we’ve rounded up five of our favourite apps to use while travelling through South Africa. We’ve accumulated a varied mix of experiences to tie together tools that you could use to explore what South Africa is arguably best known for: diversity!

Africa: Live

If you’re a first-time visitor to South Africa, one of the things you’re most likely to do is head out to a game reserve to explore the country’s vast wildlife and natural beauty.

However, doing so can often me a mixed experience should you arrive without a designated guide or without a tour package set up. Thankfully, as they say, there’s an app for that!

Africa: Live is a free application which allows users to view and share wildlife sightings directly from your mobile device. The app, which is the winner of the Best Travel App in Africa award (sponsored by Visa International and South African Tourism) has been downloaded more than 40,000 times at the time of writing.

The app allows users to log wildlife they’ve seen, and view recent sightings nearby, making it a valuable tool for both photographers and tourists eager to capture it all! In addition, the app benefits conservation efforts by logging the movements of wildlife for rangers and specialists to keep abreast of. Further, there’s a dedicated offline mode which is useful should you wish to save on your roaming bill!

Madiba’s Journey

You might be headed to South Africa with the intention  of exploring history; and perhaps one of the most pertinent reasons to do so is to chronicle the journey of South Africa’s most famous President and face of the nation, the late Nelson Mandela.

Thankfully, there’s an app which allows you to do just that. Madiba’s Journey, which was launched on the 1st of April in 2015, provides a dedicated guide to 27 historical locations around South Africa.

Details and audio narratives are provided to fully explain the significance of each site, which include the Nelson Mandela Capture Site (near Howick in Kwa-Zulu Natal), Robben Island (where the late statesman spent 18 years as a political prisoner) and the iconic Union Buildings where Mandela took office as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
