Election results shock ANCYL into calling for early elective conference

The ANC Youth League, winded by the party’s losses in the Local Government Elections, has called for the party’s 2017 elective conference to be moved forward.

The Youth League on Thursday officially called for the elective conference – where the ruling party decides on its new president – to be moved forward in order to change the party’s direction with enough time to prepare for the 2019 National Election.

EWN reports that the league believes the mother party’s leadership is caught up in issues they shouldn’t be, adding that the party shouldn’t contest moving the conference forward as new leadership is needed.

The League’s Mlondli Mkhize thinks the December next year would be too late to have the conference.

“The elective conference for us represents a situation where we are going to have people who are going to get a new mandate. The ANC leadership at this point is entangled with many issues and problems.”

“A conference, in any event, is due in December 2017. We are saying if we could have it June that would be better because it would give use more time to recover towards elections in 2019.”

Mkhize was careful not to mention Jacob Zuma as the reason for the League’s request.

“The ANC has a closed succession so we can speak on a general debate of what we have envisaged as a congress. We can’t speak about names of who’s going to come back or who is not going to come back.”
