A 44-year-old woman from Phokeng, North West, was arrested in connection with her husband’s alleged murder after the police discovered that she hired a hitman. The husband was shot and killed on Wednesday, 20 October, while the suspected hitman is still at large.

POLICE ARREST WIFE IN CONNECTION WITH HUSBAND’S MURDER

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said the woman was arrested in Luka Village near Phokeng just outside Rustenberg.

The couple’s tenants, who were staying in the house’s backrooms, heard gunshots at approximately 3:45 on Wednesday morning. The tenants went towards the sound and discovered the deceased lying in a pool of blood. The wife, police and ambulance were summoned to the scene.

“It is alleged that the victim who is the suspect’s husband, was on his way to work when he met the fatal incident. A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim sustained several gunshot wounds on his upper body. He was certified dead at the scene,” said Funani.

HITMAN ON THE RUN

According to the police, the deceased’s wife was arrested after its investigation found that the couple was heard arguing and it was established that the wife allegedly hired a hitman to carry out the killing.

The hitman allegedly fled the scene after the shooting and is still on the run. A manhunt has since been launched. Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the provincial police commissioner, condemned the incident.

The wife is expected to appear before the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court in Tlhabane on Friday, 22 October. The motive for the alleged murder is unknown at this stage and the investigation into the matter continues.
