Political analyst Professor Steven Friedman says the importance of the African National Congress (ANC) January 8 statement has declined.

This comes as the ANC celebrated 112 years of existence on Monday, 8 January. The official celebration will be on Sunday, January 13 at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.

IS THE ANC JANUARY 8 STATEMENT STILL IMPORTANT?

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Friedman said the importance of the January 8 statement is declining as there is now a realisation that there is no great deal of limitation of what the governing party can do.

Friedman said despite everyone agreeing that the statement is no longer what it used to be, the irony is that everyone is glued to their televisions and eager to see what it is about.

“Our society is changing, our politics is changing, and despite the limitations, we are no longer in a situation where what the ANC says on January 8 every year decides what will happen in the country over the next year,” he said.
