The 2018/19 crime stats are out and they make for a grim reading.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Police published the 2018/19 crime stats and, as expected, murder and sexual offences are just a couple of the categories that have been on the increase.

2018/19 crime stats: The general sentiment

At the media briefing, Police Minister, Bheki Cele, admitted that the 2018/19 crime stats did not make for “a very rosy” read. In fact, in this period, the Ministry of Police observed increases in the four most violence offences:

  • Murder (up by 3.4%)
  • Attempted murder (up by 4.1%)
  • Sexual offences (up by 4.6%)
  • Assault with grievous bodily harm (up by 2.2%)

How many murders were reported?

Based on the information coming out of the SAPS media briefing, in the 2018/19 financial year, there were a total of 21 022 murder cases reported, a 3.4% increase from the previous period.

Most of these murders were committed between Saturday and Sunday, suggesting that weekends are the most violent and deadly periods in South Africa.

Nyanga retained its position as the deadliest community in the country, as it had the most murder cases reported.

“There is a very high number of people that are murdered by people they know… It will be very difficult for police to police in such cases,” Cele conceded.

The minister admitted that without the assistance of the South African community, there is very little the police can do to intervene in these circumstances to prevent crimes of passion.

How many sexual offences were recorded?

Law enforcement agencies are still struggling to get violent crimes under control. Sexual offences have, according to SAPS, shot up by 4.6% in 2018/19 compared to the previous financial year.

SAPS further revealed that a total of 52 420 sexual offences were reported in this observed financial year, an increase of 3 212 compared to 2017/18.

This total, SAPS explained, included crimes such as rape, assault and contact sexual offences.

2018/19 crime stats: Attempted murder and violent assault on the increase

The Police Minister agreed that we are currently living in seriously violent times. The murder rate increase is the highest in the country’s history.

Moreover, from the report, we have seen that botched murder attempts and assaults with grievous bodily harm also shot up in 2018/19.

In this observed period, there were a total of 18 980 attempted murders and 170 179 reported cases of assault with grievous bodily harm.

If anything, this grim reading can only mean that the police have not been able to address the issue of extreme violence in South Africa.
