Volvo Cars South Africa announced that the starting price for its first all-electric model to be launched locally, the eagerly anticipated XC40 P8 Recharge, is a cool R1.2 million.

You’ll not be able to walk into your nearest dealership to purchase an XC40 P8 Recharge, as orders will be taken exclusively on the company’s new My Volvo website from Monday, 10 May. According to the Scandinavian firm, it shouldn’t take longer than 20 minutes to be able to purchase your new car on this platform. And there are rental options too.

Volvo SA tried to keep the XC40 P8 Recharge price competitive

“All-electric vehicles sold in South Africa have traditionally come with hefty price tags – and this has undoubtedly been a deterrent. We know that there is an appetite in South Africa for electric cars and we were determined to give customers an attractive price,”

– Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa.

Here’s what you get for your money

Volvo was smart when it planned to make the XC40 P8 Recharge its vehicle of choice to lead the company’s electric assault on our market. Compact SUVs are steadily commanding larger pieces of the monthly sales pie, and the XC40 has won multiple awards and the respect of motoring journalists and the buying public.

As can be expected from a premium electric vehicle, the XC40 P8 Recharge’s acceleration is staggering. It’s capable of a 0-100 km/h sprint of just 4.9 seconds thanks to its twin electric motors that make 304 kW and 660 N.m of torque. Of course, the talking point of everyone’s lips when it comes to EVs in South Africa is range. The XC40 P8 Recharge should be able to hit 400 km between charges.

To sweeten the deal, Volvo’s included a five-year maintenance plan in the price, three years worth of insurance, the use of a petrol-engined car for two weeks each year for three years, and a home charging station to plug your XC40 P8 Recharge into at night.

Deliveries of the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge will commence in August.
