Volkswagen showed off what the next generation Golf GTI will look like as it premiered its ID GTI Concept which is based on the ID 2all. The 100% electric GTI will go on sale by 2027.

“The perfect combination of driving pleasure and everyday usability – that is what the three letters GTI have meant for decades”, says Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

EXPECT TO SEE THE ID GTI CONCEPT ON THE ROAD BY 2027

‘The ID GTI Concept is based on the ID 2all and will be built as a sports car for the electric age that is suitable for everyday use’, according to Volkswagen‘s press release.

The ‘I’ in GTI stands for intelligence and no longer injection. In the ID GTI Concept there are selectable driver profiles, Vehicle Dynamics Manager and crucially the front axle diff lock according to Pistonheads.

In an attempt to not lose the GTI’s heritage. Volkswagen says the next model can offer the similar feeling of the drive system, steering, sound and simulated shift points of the GTI’s predecessors like the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk4 models.

In terms of the interior, there’s a large 10.9inch GTI Digital Cockpit that offers information such as lap timer, power and torque figures and a whole host of other features.

Besides the expected date of arrival (2027), Volkswagen dropped a few big hints at the production-readiness of the ID GTI concept in its boot size (between 490 litres and 1300 litres) and tyre sizes (245/35 R20).

VOLKSWAGEN WILL STILL OFFER MODELS SUCH AS THE TIGUAN AND PASSAT WITH INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

Don’t worry Volkswagen isn’t going fully-electric for all its models just yet. Alongside electric vehicles such as the ID GTI Concept, ID.4, ID.5 and new ID.7, Volkswagen will also continue to offer efficient combustion engine vehicles such as the new generations of the Passat and the Tiguan.

“We have realigned Volkswagen over the course of recent months. Our actions are always focused on the question of what customers expect from us. The complete range of our new orientation will be visible for the first time at the IAA Mobility. Volkswagen is delivering what customers want: whether electric, combustion engine or hybrid vehicles – all our new models impress with enjoyable efficiency, intuitive operation and high quality that is evident in all areas. In this way, we are meeting our promise of once more focusing completely on customer needs,” Schäfer says.
