The updated 2024 Volkswagen T-Cross made its debut this week in Germany. As one of South Africa’s most popular compact crossovers, the new model is significant for local shores. Since launch four years ago, 1.2 million units have been sold worldwide.

Specifically, in the first half of 2023, the Volkswagen T-Cross was the tenth most popular passenger car in South Africa, selling 4 149 units. Only two Chinese imports, the Haval Jolion and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro sold more in the B-segment crossover class.

The MQB A0 platform Polo-based crossover gets a light refresh to remain competitive in a hugely challenging segment. Pictured here in flagship R-Line trim, the styling tweaks include VW’s IQ Light LED matrix. These are standard on the R-Line but optional down the line. All other models get non-adaptive LED lamps as standard.

You’ll also spot the popular IQ Light bar, a-la Golf GTI, which links the headlamps either side of the VW emblem. Regardless of trim, all 2024 Volkswagen T-Cross models will receive silver ‘skid plate’ details. Wheel sizes start at 16 inches and top-spec vehicles get larger 17-inch alloys.

Around the rear, you will spot new X-motif taillamps as part of the IQ Light package. As it is upfront, the 2024 Volkswagen T-Cross gets a rear lightbar to neatly connect the light clusters. Subtly rejigged bumpers front and rear ensure the new T-Cross is 27 mm longer than its predecessor.

WHAT ABOUT THE INTERIOR?

All versions of the 2024 Volkswagen T-Cross now come with a digital instrument cluster, measuring either 8- or 9.2-inches depending on the specification.

VW says the infotainment uses the latest hardware and software and automatic climate control on top-spec models gets illuminated touch and slider controls.

Engineers from Wolfsburg claim they’ve made improvements to the perceived quality by tweaking the dashboard with soft padding while the higher-spec T-Cross models will have decorative stitching.

As this is only a mild facelift, the 2024 Volkswagen T-Cross hardpoints are unchanged from before. This means cargo capacity of 385 to 455 litres is unchanged. The rear seats offer a 60:40 folding split. Do so and utility space jumps to a cavernous 1 281 litres.

WHAT DRIVES IT?

The engine lineup is unchanged. The turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder mill is available in either 70 kW or 86 kW. A five-speed manual gearbox, six-speed or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic take care of cog-swapping duties. The 1.5-litre TSI 110 kW R-Line remains the top-of-the-range T-Cross.

The current Volkswagen T-Cross starts at R393 400 for in Comfortline spec, then R490 000 for the T-Cross Highline and R531 900 for the R-Line. We anticipate small increases to pricing for the 2024 Volkswagen T-Cross.

Details on local pricing and specification will be made available closer to the South African launch.
