Over 50 000 vehicles were sold locally during March 2023, beating February’s figure of 45 198 units by a significant margin. We look at the 10 best-selling cars in South Africa for March 2023.

TOYOTA HILUX WAS THE BEST-SELLING CAR IN MARCH

Three bakkie models occupied the top positions in the latest car sales figures. The Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max and Ford Ranger all sold over 2 000 units, with the Hilux was the best-selling car with 3 920 deliveries last month.

According to Naamsa 31 613 units were registered in March 2023 in the new passenger car market in South Africa. That figure was a decline of 2157 cars, or 6.4%, compared to the 33 788 new passenger cars sold in March 2022, reported by Motorpress.

SUZUKI AND NISSAN SNUCK INTO THE TOP 10 BEST-SELLING LIST

The ubiquitous Polo Vivo was Volkswagen’s only entry in the top 10. The German brand locally-produced Polo usually finds a spot in the chart but last month it found itself in 11th spot with 1008 units sold.

The Nissan NP200 and Suzuki Swift both made the top 10 with 1404 and 1248 sales respectively.

Toyota had another sterling month as the market leader with total sales of 13 406 sales. The Japanese carmaker, who has a production plant in Durban, grabbed 26.7% market share. It had the top-selling vehicles in the Passenger, Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV), Medium Commercial Vehicle (MCV) and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) segments.

In terms of export sales, Naamsa says it recorded an increase of 1026 units, or 3.1% to 34 134 units in March 2023 compared to the 33,108 vehicles exported in March 2022.
