Cape Town E-Prix: South Africa’s only driver OUT

Mahindra Racing has withdrawn its and customer ABT CUPRA’s cars from the Cape Town E-Prix due to rear suspension safety concerns.

Mahindra Racing has withdrawn its and customer ABT CUPRA’s cars from the Cape Town E-Prix due to rear suspension safety concerns.

The team made the decision during qualifying ahead of the Cape Town E-Prix, and following practice, where in Free Practice 1 driver Lucas di Grassi (Mahindra Racing) had pulled off the circuit with broken rear suspension.

The manufacturer made the decision on safety grounds pending further investigation as to the exact cause of the problem.

South Africa had one Cape Town E-Prix driver

Customer team ABT CUPRA, which also runs the M9Electro, have also withdrawn from the weekend.

One to the casualties for ABT CUPRA was South Africa’s only driver in the race, Kelvin van der Linde.

A statement from Mahindra read: “Mahindra Racing have confirmed their withdrawal from the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship qualifying sessions and the Cape Town E-Prix Round 5 due to rear suspension safety concerns. 

“A thorough investigation on the suspension elements of the Mahindra M9Electro race cars will take place on the team’s return to the UK.

“This decision also affects their customer team ABT CUPRA, who will also not take part in the remainder of qualifying or the race.

“The safety of the drivers and extended teams is of utmost importance at this point in time.”

The race starts at 16:00 on Saturday.
