The mask is made from 18-carat white gold and is studded with 3,600 black and white diamonds. Over 25 artisans from renowned Israeli brand, Yvel Jewellery, are working on the piece, which was commissioned by one of their long-standing clients.
Designer of the mask and owner of Yvel Jewellery Isaac Levy says the client is a Chinese art collector living in the United States (US) who is charming, outgoing, and likes to stand out.
“I don’t think [the customer is] going to use it going to the supermarket, but he is going to use it here and there, I’m sure,” said Levy.
Levy said his client had three criteria when commissioning the designer to make the mask. He wanted it to be fitted with N99 filters for maximum protection, to be the world’s most expensive mask, and to be finished by the end of the year.
The mask will weigh 270g and will be fitted with N99 filters to offer a high level of protection at the request of the client. According to Associated Press, the gold and diamond mask will be worth $1.5 million (R26.2 million) on completion, which will be by 31 December.
Levy said he is grateful that his company was given the opportunity to create it.
“I am happy that this mask gave us enough work for our employees to be able to provide their jobs in very challenging times like these times right now,” he said.
He said that it might be a big thing for some people around the world to own the most expensive mask on the planet, but for his company, it was a way to protect the positions of the people in the factory in order for them to be able to support their families.
For the art collector with everything, this beautiful-if-rather-ostentatious piece might just be the cherry on the top.
