Black Friday is fast approaching, and with it, gastronomical deals and promotions — or at least that’s what the advertisements say. While paying 10% less for something you couldn’t afford in the first place isn’t exactly the smartest thing, most people love a good bargain.

This is why thousands of people spend thousands of rands on specials every year. In fact, last year this time, there were a few items that were especially sought after.

Black Friday: Here’s what people spend their money on

Every year, consumers wait patiently for Black Friday to arrive in the hopes of buying their most coveted items at unbeatable prices.

This year, the big sale will take place on 24 November this year and judging by various social media posts, South Africans are gearing up to make those purchases.

If you’re wondering what most people buy on Black Friday, last year e-commerce giant Takealot revealed which items sold the most.

Appliances, smart gadgets and alcohol

According to this BusinessTech article, the number one most-sold product for last year on Takealot was Ballantine’s Finest Scotch Whisky.

“The most orders placed by a single customer on the day was 58 orders, and the biggest single basket value was R190,179,” the online retail giant reported.

The second most purchased items were TVs.

The Hisense 58” TV came in at second place on the list, while the Samsung 75” TV came in at third place.

Other items which generally sold well were large appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers. Smartphones were also a big contender, according to data analytics firm GfK.
