Sunday Movie: The Meg – What you need to know

The Meg Plot

A deep-sea observation submersible has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific… with its crew trapped inside.

With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer, against the wishes of his daughter.

They set out to save the crew from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 22-metre-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon.

Teamed with Suyin, Taylor must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below.

Best quote

Hey, I mean no offense, Dr. Zhang. I mean, if there was two people on this planet that could get me back into the water, it’s probably you two. But you can’t. You’re going to tell me your problem, and I’ll say no. You’re going to offer me money. I’ll still say no. You’re going to appeal to my better nature, and I’m going to say no. Because I don’t have one.

Critics’ reviews

The critics weren’t fond of The Meg. Even though most thought it was a terrbile film, they enjoyed it nevertheless. Ed Potton from Times UK explains:

There’s no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

Vincent Schilling from Indian County Today describes as a “giant shark dud,” and says it was so bad that he actually enjoyed it:

“A giant shark dud. Hilariously bad. I actually enjoyed this movie because it was so horrible. The painful moments of Jason Statham (and I LOVE Statham) and the lead actress were uncomfortable, and I really cared less if anyone got eaten.”

The Meg is fine when you’re watching it, but you could easily keep one eye on the screen or bury your head in your popcorn and not miss much.
