When we talk about pioneers, we are referring to former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star Siphiwe Tshabalala who has launched his own children’s comic book, titled Super Shabba. And the author, Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala, just happens to be married to Tshabalala.

We all remember Tshabalala for his spectacular opening goal against Mexico in the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Well, he has once again become the first to launch a comic book in South Africa.

What is ‘Super Shabba’ about?

Super Shabba tells of a child who grew up in dusty Soweto and dreamed of representing his country at a Fifa World Cup.

Feels like you’ve heard this before? Well that may be because it is about Tshabalala’s own path to football fame.

“If you look at it, this is a story about my journey and the Fifa World Cup. The story is meant to inspire the African child,” he said in a statement released by the South African Football Association (Safa).

He goes on to say that he wanted to tell a story that the ordinary person would relate to. In this case, that meant having a superhero that you might meet at the spaza shop or in the streets.

Tshabalala is married to 2010 Miss South Africa Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala, who wrote the book. It is available in four languages: Sesotho, isiZulu, Setswana and English and is a welcome addition to the franchised Supa Strikers.

An inspirational comic book

The soccer star hopes the book will be an inspiration to the children who read it. Picture this: A domestic worker might buy this book for her son who goes to a government school. This book may allow him the chance to dream far beyond his wildest imagination. It might give him hope that these dreams indeed may become reality.

In the book, Shabba recounts how he was bullied because of his size and height. However, he did not let that pull him down because he knew what his dreams were.

He worked consistently and hard to make sure that he got what he wanted. In addition, he is a man who knows how to accept defeat. Shabba tried to start a fish and chips business but that failed. He uses this to warns players about the importance of having other business to sustain themselves when their football careers end.

Preparing for life after football

Although the 35-year-old Tshabalala hasn’t officially hung up his boots just yet, he is preparing for life after football.

He previously partnered with his stunning wife by creating a clothing line for children called SB Kids, short for Super Shabba and Princess Bokang. The collection caters for children between the ages of two and ten years and proudly features animated images of the power couple.

The couple’s message is of black representation and giving black children positive images that they can look up. This shines through all of their joint collaborations. The merchandise is on sale at Jet retail stores.
